Finding the Right Therapist

Finding the right therapist is an important part of the therapeutic process.

I often think therapists are a bit like books. We do not all enjoy the same books, do we? We are drawn to different genres, writing styles, and ways of seeing the world. What resonates with one person may leave another feeling disconnected.

The same is true of therapy. Every therapist brings their own personality, approach, and way of working. Not every therapist will feel like the right fit for every person, and that is perfectly natural.

Like books, therapists can be more complex than first impressions suggest. A therapist may initially remind you of someone you are unsure about, or their manner may feel unfamiliar. Sometimes these first reactions can soften over time, allowing something meaningful to develop. Equally, there are times when a therapist simply does not feel right for you, and it is important to trust that too.

The therapeutic relationship is one of the most significant factors in successful therapy. This is why I offer an introductory consultation, giving us an opportunity to get a sense of one another and explore whether we might work well together.

If you feel able to, I encourage you to share any concerns or uncertainties you may have from the outset. Often, exploring these thoughts together can be valuable in itself.

My role is not to persuade you that I am the right therapist for you. Rather, I hope to help you reflect on what you need and what kind of support feels most appropriate. Whether we decide to work together or not, I will do my best to help you find the support that feels right for you.
